About Shenton Park
As a continuation of my project to share with you a local’s view on the delights of our inner city suburbs, let me now share my perspective on the Perth suburb of Shenton Park, Subiaco’s quieter neighbour.
Location:
Shenton Park is positioned right next door to Perth’s Kings Park botanical gardens. It’s an awesome green space with heritage houses and large mature trees, very popular with the local birdlife. Waking up to the chatter of birds is a hallmark of staying in Shenton Park. There is a train station at the end of Onslow Road, but depending on where you are in Shenton Park, it can be quite a hike to the service. Luckily it’s super easy to get into the city on foot for the fit or by bus. The bus runs along Thomas St, down Kings Park Road and straight into the city. This is a big benefit for anyone going to work or visiting Perth as a tourist as Perth city car parking is expensive. The same bus heading the other direction heads to Cottesloe Beach and Fremantle.
No Car Required:
It’s quite possible to visit Shenton Park without a car. You can get around just fine on public transport for most things. It’s situated right on a Fremantle/Perth bus route. The train also passes through, but from the Thomas St end of Shenton Park – it’s quite a walk. Save on costs and skip the car hire. Uber can help you out if Perth’s public transport can’t. Handy Hint – Google Maps will detail the bus and train routes and timetables for you.
Charming Streetscape:
As Shenton Park is one of the older suburbs of Perth, it has a large number of heritage homes and leafy streets – making for a charming streetscape. Restaurants/Cafes/Coffee:
There is a small village in Shenton Park that has everything you need including 24 hour supermarket, bakery, bottle shop, newsagent, post office, take aways, cafes and good coffee. If you’re looking for more choice, then Subiaco is just next door and is a verifiable foodie’s delight. Handy Hint: If you get a chance try Galileo Restaurant on Onslow Road Shenton Park – it’s one of my all time favourites.
High Street Fashion:
The nearest fashion shopping can be found next door in the charming streets of Rokeby Road Subiaco. Finish with a cold drink or snack at one of the many cafes/restaurants to reward yourself. Subiaco has council car parks offering 3 hours free parking if you need to bring the car to get your purchases home. Check out the local specials and offers at #SeeSubiaco here. Another alternative is to jump on the bus to the city centre where you’ll also be spoilt for choice.
Entertainment:
When staying in Shenton Park, look next door to Subiaco for your entertainment options. For starters, you can see a show at The Regal Theatre or the Subiaco Arts Center. – link You can watch a game of AFL footy or a concert at Domain Stadium (be quick – the footy is moving in 2018 to the casino district). There’s not currently a cinema in Shenton Park, but a very short drive to Nedlands puts you at the Windsor Cinema – a suburban gem of a Cinema. Handy Hint: The Windsor is licensed, grab a glass of wine with your movie.
Seasonal Arts Options:
Come summer, it’s common practice for the locals to grab the picnic basket and a cool beverage and head out to the park for entertainment. The Perth International Arts Festival runs from a number of outdoor locations, my favourite being just down the road at the University of Western Australia – Somerville Auditorium. Kings Park – our beautiful botanical gardens is only a short walk or drive away from Shenton Park. They also run an outdoor cinema program as well as other wonderful events. Nearby Attractions:
Just nearby are the following attractions – the Claremont Showgrounds (home of the Perth Royal Show), WA’s Athletics Stadium, Perth Arena and University of Western Australia (UWA).
Shenton Park Hospitals:
Shenton Park has Perth’s super hospital – Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (Charlies) right in the middle of it. It also has Hollywood Private Hospital and from 2017 it will house the new Perth Children’s Hospital (replacing Princess Margaret Hospital for Children). King Edward Memorial Hospital and St John of God Subiaco are right next door in Subiaco.
Accommodation:
There is one Motel – King Park Motel, and zero hotels in Shenton Park. Being a mecca for all things hospital and having the University of Western Australia right next door in Nedlands, Shenton Park has a high demand for short term furnished apartments. These can be sourced via the usual channels Airbnb, Booking.com, Trip Advisor etc. If you prefer a local approach rather than a big global company looking after your travel needs, and appreciate a person who knows the properties and location on the other side of the phone, then Staywest Apartments is your local provider.
