About Subiaco

There is so much to like about the Perth suburb of Subiaco. Let me tell you all about it from the perspective of one who lives here in Perth.

Location:

Subiaco is crazy close to the Perth city center. In fact it’s the first residential suburb west (beach side) of the Perth city centre. This means that no matter where you stay in Subiaco, it’s super easy to get into the city on foot, by bus or by train. This is a big benefit for anyone going to work or visiting Perth as a tourist as Perth city car parking is expensive.

No Car Required:

It’s quite possible to visit Subiaco without a car. You can get around just fine on public transport for most things. It’s situated right on the Fremantle train line, and has many bus services passing through. Save on costs and skip the car hire. Uber can help you out if Perth’s public transport can’t. Handy Hint – Google Maps will detail the bus and train routes and timetables for you.

Charming Streetscape:

Top Restaurants/Cafes/Coffee:

Subiaco is a foodie’s delight. There are many, many astounding options for eating out – check them out here.

High Street Fashion:

You can head to an expansive mall kilometres away from the city centre, or you can stroll the charming streets of Rokeby Road for your high street fashion. Finish with a cold drink or snack at one of the many cafes/restaurants to reward yourself. Subiaco has council car parks offering 3 hours free parking if you need to bring the car to get your purchases home. Check out the local specials and offers at #SeeSubiaco here.

Entertainment:

Subiaco has a number of entertainment options. For starters, you can see a show at The Regal Theatre or the Subiaco Arts Center. – link  You can watch a game of AFL footy or a concert at Domain Stadium (be quick – the footy is moving in 2018 to the casino district). There’s not currently a cinema in Subiaco, but a short drive to Nedlands puts you at the Windsor Cinema – a suburban gem of a Cinema. Handy Hint: The Windsor is licensed, grab a glass of wine with your movie.

Seasonal Arts Options:

Come summer, it’s common practice for the locals to grab the picnic basket and a cool beverage and head out to the park for entertainment. The Perth International Arts Festival runs from a number of outdoor locations, my favourite being just down the road at the University of Western Australia – Somerville Auditorium. Kings Park – our beautiful botanical gardens is only a short walk or drive away from Subiaco. They also run an outdoor cinema program as well as other wonderful events. Nearby Attractions:

Just nearby are the following attractions – the Claremont Showgrounds (home of the Perth Royal Show), WA’s Athletics Stadium, Perth Arena  – link and University of Western Australia (UWA).

Perth Hospitals:

Subiaco is a bit of a medical hub, being home to the following hospitals. King Edward Memorial Hospital, Perth Children’s Hospital (replacing Princess Margaret Hospital for Children), St John of God Subiaco and Hollywood Private Hospital.

Accommodation:

2016 saw the closing of Darby Park Serviced Residences, and at that time Subiaco lost it’s only hotel. There’s another being built due to open in 2018, but in the meantime visitors are spoilt with choice with the many private rentals available via online travel channels such as Stayz, Airbnb and Booking.com. If you prefer a local approach rather than a big global company looking after your travel needs, and appreciate a person who knows the properties on the other side of the phone – then Staywest Apartments is your local provider. Staywest Apartments have residential apartments for short term rent – 5 night minimum stay.
